Wensleydale, North Yorkshire set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and home to some of the countries most beautiful scenery is a place that captures the hearts and imaginations of the many that live here, work in or visit the dale. The countryside is criss-crossed with dry stone walls along its lush green valley and limestone scars.
Hawes, the capital of Upper Wensleydale and Leyburn Lower Wensleydale are thriving market towns each with their own merits. Other areas include Aysgarth, home to the famous waterfall (Aysgarth Falls) featured in the film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Askrigg famous for its clock making and being Darrowby the fictitious home to TV vet James Herriot in all creatures great and small, Gayle known for Gayle Mills appearance on the BBC 2 show restoration and Middleham well known for its racehorse training.
Sheep and Dairy farming still play a big part of life in t
he dale and the local auction marts are kept busy all year round. Hill farming is still as laborious as ever and hay and silage are a vital part of the system as are the walls, gates and barns so please spare a thought for the farmers and take extra care when walking on the dale.
